THE AREA

ABOUT THURROCK

Gateway to the south-east - Thurrock Mini Guide

Thurrock is situated in the south-west of Essex and borders the north bank of the Thames. Thurrock is the gateway to London with easy access to both Kent and Essex via the M25 motorway and Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in Europe.

This thriving borough encompasses huge swathes of green belt country and along its 18 miles (29km) of Thames frontage are many important marshland wildlife habitats. The area's unique riverside location and vast natural resources are the key to its past and future development, growth and success.

Rich heritage
For lovers of history and heritage Thurrock's fascinating past will be of great interest. Prehistoric tribes settled here and worked the land followed by Romans, then by Anglo-Saxons, whose settlement were unearthed by archaeologists at Mucking. The importance of agriculture in the area continued into the mediaeval period, reflected by the magnificent Woolmarket at Horndon-on-the-Hill.

The defence of the capital was closely linked with Thurrock. Henry VIII built riverside Block Houses at East and West Tilbury, which later became Coalhouse Fort and Tilbury Fort. It was at West Tilbury that Queen Elizabeth I gave her famous speech to her troops, gathered to meet the Spanish Armada threat. Both forts played an important defence role during the two world wars and visitors can see military hardware from that period at the forts as well as enjoying the tremendous river views.

The area has many bridleways, footpaths and country parks, including Davy Down within the Mardyke valley. The river's floodplain is a broad tract of grassland which is an important feature of the landscape of the area.

Thurrock blossoms
Thurrock has won many awards in national competitions in recognition of its community's floral achievements.

If you take the trouble to leave the beaten track of the M25 and the A13 you will discover some delightful picture postcard villages which still retain traditional features such as the village green, church and pub.

Fun and fitness
Fitness enthusiasts are spoilt for choice in Thurrock. The borough's leisure centres boast a wide range of facilities and in addition there are watersports and motorsports centres in the area. You can also, during certain weeks of the year, take a trip on a paddlesteamer to London and the East Anglia and Kent coasts or cruise the Thames on the MV Princess Pocahontas.

Out on the town
Thurrock has entertainment venues to suit every taste and pocket from cinemas, bingo, restaurants and bars, theatre, cabaret and clubs as well as an exciting round of annual events to enjoy.

The natural environment ...
Chafford Hundred has been developed around the two huge natural features of Warren Gorge and Lion Gorge, both of which have been preserved as amenities for residents. In total, more than 250 acres of Chafford Hundred has been devoted to public open space like this. A network of greenways and cycleways have been created to separate the individual neighbourhoods and to connect with the amenities. Generously landscaped, lit and paved, these greenways and cycleways provide a convenient way for children to get to school, as well as some very pleasant walks.

Community life ...
The town of Chafford Hundred now has two modern new primary schools, a Safeway superstore, a community centre, a medical centre, a dental care practice, a leisure club, several pub/restaurants and churches for various denominations. The adjacent Lakeside Shopping Centre and Thurrock Retail Park are easily accessed via a purpose-built road link which has been tunnelled beneath the railway line.

Shopping and entertainment ...
Lakeside Shopping Centre not only has more than 300 shops, it also has a food court, a multiplex cinema and a watersports centre at the lake. There are also a number of local restaurants and pubs offering Italian, Far-Eastern and English Food. For ‘dramatic’ evenings, there are several theatres within easy reach.

Family days out ...
In the vicinity of Chafford Hundred, there are a variety of attractions to suit all tastes and ages - whether you’re a thrill-seeker or are after something more peaceful! Family attractions in this region include arts and craft centres, fantasy parks, indoor playgrounds, museums, go-karting circuits, roller and ice-skating rinks, a sea life centre, stately homes, a steam railway, a toy museum, a zoo and several animal centres.

Sporting pursuits ...
In the centre of Chafford Hundred, the Bannatyne Health and Leisure club includes a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, a fitness suite, sauna and steam room, as well as a Creche and full time children’s day nursery. There are also several local golf courses and other sports clubs offering a wide variety of different leisure activities.

Education ...
In addition to the day nursery at the Bannatyne leisure centre, Chafford Hundred has two new primary schools and plans for a secondary school to open in September 2001. The Warren Primary School and Tudor Court County Primary School both achieved good levels of performance in Key Stage 2 tests. (Source - DFEE 2000 Primary School Performance Tables).

The area’s interesting history ...
Modern day Chafford Hundred occupies a large part of the ancient Chafford Hundred, which was first identified by this name in the Domesday Book in 1086. The name comes from the tenth century Anglo-Saxon practice of dividing shires into administrative areas of hundred hides - a hide being roughly 120 acres in this region.
