Foundation iOS Developer (Manchester)

It's a really exciting time to be working in SpareRoom's apps team. The iOS app is undergoing a complete visual refresh, adopting and adapting Apple's design principles into SpareRoom's brand. It's not just the visuals that are being overhauled, we're also delivering impactful UX improvements, adding exciting new features and prototyping new ideas.

Over the last year we've been featured by Apple multiple times, including as App of the Day, positioned alongside the biggest names on the App Store. We're really excited about the future of our apps at SpareRoom and we're looking for a Foundation Developer to join our iOS team to help us to achieve our goals.

About the role

As our Foundation iOS Developer, you'll work with our team to make meaningful contributions to our apps.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve:

  • Adding new features to the SpareRoom app
  • Writing clean, pragmatic and testable code
  • Rewriting and refactoring parts of the app into Swift
  • Working alongside other members of the team to plan future features and improvements
  • Learning new programming techniques and technologies, supported and mentored along the way

About you

We're looking for someone with a genuine passion for iOS, a keen eye for detail, desire to learn and create intuitive apps that help people to find their perfect home or flatmate easily.

The following skills are required for the role:

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with Object-Oriented Programming
  • Knowledge of Swift and the iOS SDK
  • Experience with Xcode and MacOS
  • The ability to approach problems logically and methodically

We'd love it if you had any of the following:

  • One or more apps that you've created (even better if it's live on the App Store)
  • Experience with Apple's native testing frameworks
  • Knowledge of Storyboards and Autolayout
  • Git and GitHub
  • RESTful APIs and JSON

Customer Service Advisor (Manchester)

Starting salary of £17,000 p/a, raising to £17,500 on completion of probation. Plus you’ll be eligible to earn between £120 and £170 a month as part of our bonus scheme, which can boost your earnings to £18,940 - £19,540p/a

In addition to the monthly bonus scheme, we also offer a Private Healthcare Scheme, Matched Contribution Pension Scheme, Travel Season Ticket Loan, Cycle to Work Scheme and monthly sports contributions (all applicable upon the successful completion of a 3-6 month probationary period). Our award winning Customer Service Team provides outstanding support to SpareRoom's 8 million registered users. As part of this team, our Customer Service Advisors handle all incoming enquiries whilst working alongside the Site Moderation Team who handle compliance and maintenance duties.

You'll be part of a busy team who work hard but who have fun along the way and are renowned for excellent service. The role is varied and will involve using both in-house and well-known computer systems.

On a daily basis, you will be required to communicate directly with users of our site via email and phone. You will interact with customers to provide and process information in response to enquiries, concerns and requests about our website and services. You will also be responsible for helping to maintain the site through administrative tasks.

As a member of the team and the first point of contact for our customers, you represent the values and image of the company and as such are expected to be polite and courteous at all times.

Responsibilities and duties:
  • To provide exceptional customer service within a fast-paced and customer-focused environment.
  • To answer all UK and US customer enquiries by phone and email.
  • To provide clear and concise customer information, handle and process transactions, manage customer access and respond to all types of incoming enquiries in an efficient, friendly and professional manner.
  • To frequently check phone voicemails.
  • To work as part of a team to ensure the smooth running of the department.
  • To help maintain site security and quality through site moderation and scam detection.
  • To maintain and achieve own KPI's.
  • To assist the Site Moderation Team as and when required.
Skills and experience:
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong background in Customer Service. Experience in Web or IT Customer Service would be beneficial.
  • Confident and positive personality.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy are essential.
  • Computer literate with experience of email and the internet, plus a reasonable standard of typing. Touch typing isn't a necessity but would be an advantage.
  • A clear telephone voice with a polite, tactful and friendly attitude.

  • Ability to effectively multi-task and prioritise your workload.

We are recruiting for a full-time position with working hours on a shift pattern of 10 days per fortnight, including every other weekend with one set day off in the week. Our office hours are 9 am - 9 pm Monday to Friday and 9 am - 8 pm weekends.


Software Developer - Core Team (Backend)

We are looking for a foundation developer to join us to increase the delivery capacity of our core team. Our core platform is written mostly in Perl (with small projects in Node.js and C#) and supports both an API for apps (iOS and Android) and a web front end. The successful applicant will receive guidance and mentoring from our experienced developers.

What you can expect to do as a Core Developer at SpareRoom:
  • To work with modern Perl for our main web application and use other technologies, languages and tools like MySQL, Gearman, Memcached, Sphinx, Node.js, C#, GitHub and Jenkins.
  • Help develop new features, make improvements and fix bugs in a secure, well-tested, and performant way.
  • Develop and extend RESTful APIs.
  • To help maintain current mailshots and extend our in-house email tools to allow for self service email sending for our marketing team.
  • Use MySQL to gather data and create custom, reusable reports for internal use.

Site Moderator (Manchester)

Our Site Moderation Team work alongside SpareRoom’s award winning Customer Service Team who provide outstanding support to SpareRoom’s 9.5 million registered users. Our Site Moderators are responsible for moderating and approving all user-generated content, scam and fraud detection and all compliance related issues.

You’ll be part of a busy team who work hard but have fun along the way, and are renowned for excellent service.

On a daily basis you’ll be required to communicate directly with users of our site via email and phone. You'll interact with customers to provide and process information in response to enquiries, concerns and requests about our website and services. You'll also be responsible for helping to maintain the site through administrative tasks.

  • Investigate and take appropriate action on reports of suspicious adverts.
  • Provide information and advice to other departments and customers in relation to scam detection.
  • Assist in developing, monitoring and implementing processes to aid scam detection and prevent future instances.
  • Maintain information records and collate data to aid future investigations.
  • Ensure advert content including photos and videos meet the terms and conditions of the website.
  • Complete individual customer verifications and tenant reference requests.
  • Assist with the completion of DPA requests from relevant authorities.
  • Communicate with site users over the phone where necessary.
  • Investigate and respond to reports received from site users via email.
Skills and experience:
  • A strong customer focus with the ability to deliver great service, both individually and as part of a team.
  • Experience in a web based company. A focus on fraud or risk investigation and resolution would be beneficial.
  • A background in complaint resolution would be useful, but not essential.
  • Confident and positive personality with excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail are essential.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new investigative techniques.
  • Ability to remain calm and empathetic when under pressure or dealing with difficult situations.
  • Able to understand the customers point of view but be able to communicate our policies and values effectively.
