Double room for dog-lover postgrad 2019-20
***/Update OCTOBER 11 2019/***
One room will be available from January 1st (2020)
This house is best suited postgraduate students (mature/serious undergraduates can be considered). All bills included in rent, including electricity, fibre-optic internet, TV-license and fortnightly cleaning of common areas. There are no hidden extras.
The house is nicely refurbished and tastefully decorated, and comes with high quality furniture -- it hardly looks like a student dig! There is also a dishwasher, which is good to avoid kitchen conflicts. Gas hob and high capacity oven/range, replaced in 2018. Downstairs bathroom, and small wc upstairs. Separate dining room and living room. Plenty of space!
The house is situated in Bowburn (DH6 5BB), a short bus ride from Durham. Although Bowburn is not a comfortable walking distance from Durham, being on the bus route between Queens campus (Stockton) and Durham campus, there is an express bus service (X12) to get you to either. The X12 takes 7 minutes to get to the Durham university library/Palatine centre, passing the university sports grounds (Maiden castle) on the way, and it is free for staff and students at Durham uni. Free travel is limited to the X12 bus service--Just show your campus card to the driver and s/he will let you on for free! Biking is also perfectly feasible (15 minutes to Maiden Castle, about 20 minutes toj return, depending on how good a shape you're in :)).
Free parking is practically always available within 15 meters of the front door, and you can be on the A1 motorway within a minute.
There is a supermarket (Coop) a mere 1 minute-walk away; and an NHS medical centre can be found within a 5-minute walk.
Rent is 70 pounds a week provided an 11-month contract (or longer) is signed. Shorter-term lets can be negotiated (price depends on period). I have frozen the 2007 rent (70GBP was the going rate when I first started my studies in Durham) because there has not really been much inflation since then (bills and cleaner salary have practically not changed). The rent also reflects distance to the centre of Durham into account. That said, no one has ever complained about the distance to town; probably due to the good bus services.
Sorry, couples are not accepted for single-room occupancy. For council tax purposes, the house can only be let to students (otherwise total rent would be 395 pounds/month).
This is a dog-friendly house, but no dogs have signed up for the 2019-20 academic year. :)
Other relevant changes made last two years: new quality (high capacity) oven. New windows in loft for better insulation. New heating/hot water boiler, new ceiling light in kitchen. Improved façades.
Thanks for reading to the end, and looking forward to hearing from you!
