Housemate wanted for characterful 300 year old house in Spitalfields, on a pay what you can afford basis.

I currently share with my cousin who just moved in to start her first job after graduation, and my ridiculously cute Scottish Fold cat Boo. I’m regularly away on business, so I’m looking for someone who loves cats to help look after Boo. Boo is crazy about humans and requires an inordinate amount of attention, so someone who works from home a lot is preferred.

I’ve lived with 14 people over the past 10 years, aged 21 to 51 (well, 5 to 51 if you include my last housemate’s daughter who lived with us!) and from many walks of life, and believe the best housemate matches aren’t always the obvious ones. Shared interests can be great, but it’s the interests we don’t (yet) share that can be the most rewarding. So I’m open minded about who I live with, though being a frustrated musician with many instruments around the house (that don’t get played enough!), someone who plays something might be nice. But someone who we get on well with and who has a positive energy to contribute to the household is what’s important.

Why ‘pay what you can afford’? I’m way more interested in finding the right person than maximising the rental income. Those 14 past housemates have paid anything from nothing to market rent (with all bills included) and many points in between.

The room is ensuite, and even has a small outside space off it. There’s another room next to it that could be turned into a work space, or a home gym. You essentially get a whole floor to yourself.

We also have a weekly cleaner, though I still want someone clean and reasonably tidy!

I’ve got really into healthy living and eating in recent years, and love cooking and eating together. So it’s no longer a party house I’m afraid - more cards, backgammon and movie nights 🙂

It’s a great neighbourhood to live in - very friendly neighbours in the surrounding streets, with the vibrant Brick Lane on one side, and Commercial Street and Spitalfields market on the other. We’re also close to several transport links, inc the overground, tubes and trains at Liverpool Street and the Elizabeth Line. Cheap residential parking permits are available. And happy to add you to my car insurance if you need to use a car from time to time.

Finally, the room is available from 1st November and I need whoever it is to move in that weekend.

Oh, and I should probably mention I’m the founder of SpareRoom 🙂

If you're interested, make sure you have a live Room Wanted Ad. Don't forget to upload a video introducing yourself, explaining what you're looking for, and describing what makes you a great flatmate. Keep your video general rather than addressing me directly - this way, you won't limit your chances of finding other potential new houseshares!
