We are looking for a new housemate to join our housing co-operative.
Please make sure you know or have read a bit about what a housing co-op is before applying - this is not a straightforward houseshare. We are very happy to talk more and answer questions about housing co-ops if we invite you round to see the house, but for now we just want to make sure applicants have an understanding of what they are applying to.
Here is a basic definition: A housing co-op is similar to a housing association, but it is managed (either entirely, or mainly) by its tenants. A housing co-op is, on one level, a group of people who have control over their own housing, without actually owning it personally.
In our housing coop, members tend to live communally (e. g we buy food as a house, take it in turns to cook and eat together when we can) and we each have a responsibility to contribute to the running of the coop. We have a secretary, a treasurer, a maintenance co-ordinator and a food monitor. We have meetings to make decisions about how we run the house.
Please go to mach. coop/join to read our FAQ!
The room is available in our six bedroom house with lots of communal space, solar hot-water, a small garden, decent amounts of bike parking and lots of things going on. Close to the town centre and the train station. Rent is around £320/month, including all bills (& Fibre optic broadband) and lots of vegetarian communal food. Current housemates are three women and two men, all in our twenties and thirties.
The kitchen is vegetarian/vegan and we don't smoke or vape inside. We aren't open to short term housemates, but rather we want someone who is up for committing and getting involved in the co-op.
If you'd like to apply, please go our website and fill in our application for by 6pm on MONDAY 17TH MAY. Our website is mach. coop/join
We'll let you know within a few days of Wed 5th May whether we'd like you to come to a socially distanced dinner for a chat in our garden the following week.
When choosing a new co-op member we will take the following into account:
- How well we think you would fit in the House and Coop;
- How aligned you are with Cooperative Principles, including your commitment to work sharing;
- How significant your need for housing is;
- Any barriers you may face in accessing housing elsewhere due to discrimination
