We are looking for someone who is kind, calm and sensible to help make sure there is always someone around for our mother, Dinah, who is 86 and has dementia.
The people:
Dinah likes looking at The Times, or books, watching TV or reminiscing. Sometimes we go for a walk along the canal or to Primrose Hill. Two rooms are occupied by her son and a daughter who often stay over and are often around in the evenings. One of Dinah’s post-uni grandchildren is moving in. Dinah has a carer each day (8am – 7pm). Dinah’s grandson lives in the self-contained basement flat.
The house:
The house is 4 storeys, quiet and a little scruffy. The garden backs onto the Regent’s Canal and there are beautiful views. It is near Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill village. The house is 10 minutes’ walk from Camden Town station and 11 minutes to Chalk Farm. The room is on the top floor: 3.4 x 2.1 metres (11ft x 7ft). There are other rooms that might be possible to convert to study in. The kitchen has a washing machine and a dishwasher.
The role:
We are looking for someone to be companionable, particularly from 7pm till late a couple of evenings per week and to be available at night on a Saturday night and to be willing to help out at some other times. Sometimes cooking will be needed. Female only, because Dinah needs some assistance with the toilet and clothes. Dinah needs reminding to go to bed and sometimes walks about at night and might be persuaded to return to bed. In return for about 15 hours per week, you get free accommodation and bills.
Type of person:
The set-up would be good for someone who is writing, studying or going out to part-time work. A student nurse would be ideal! You must be tolerant of repeatedly being asked the same questions and not mind somebody who might be irascible at times. ‘Dementia-friendly’. Non smoker. No pets or parties.
You should have a caring personality and be able to get on with people. Dinah dislikes people she feels are bossing her about. She likes happy gentle people and those who are slightly subservient or willing to take orders or be diplomatic. You will also need to be pro-active - for example if there is an emergency, or if something in the household needs planning.
We expect this will be popular, so please say something about yourself and why you want to live with us when you reply. Meeting soon for an immediate start.
