5 tips for choosing a flatmate

1. Know what you want

We don’t all want a flatmate who’ll be our BFFL too… but you might want someone you can have the odd dinner with. Figure out what you want your relationship to be and use this as a starting point for finding the right match.

2. Consider your lifestyles

Let’s face it: if you’re in bed by 9pm and up at 6am, you’re not going to enjoy living with someone who’s cooking their dinner at midnight...

3. Think about the cleaning

Ah, cleaning: the greatest cause of disagreement in a flatshare. Sounds obvious, but if you’re a neat freak who loves washing up, you’re probably best avoiding someone who doesn’t mind leaving crusty pans of beans on the side for three days. Find out their cleaning priorities, and be honest about yours too.

4. Meet everyone first

We get it – moving in with a big group can be overwhelming. So why not sort out a drink or casual meeting before you move in? You’ll also swerve the awkwardness of meeting in the corridor on move-in day and finding out you don’t gel with one of the group…

5. Find out any house rules that already exist

... and decide if you’d be able to stick to them. You’ll save yourself a lot of hassle if you avoid moving in with people who have rules you don’t agree with.
