Quiet Furnished Double Room in New-Build Family Home – Gilesgate DH1 2
One furnished double room is available in our brand-new four-bedroom detached house on Bishop’s Walk, Gilesgate.
The house is on a quiet new estate close to Tesco, Lidl, Dragonville Shopping Centre, a gym and regular bus routes. Central Durham University sites are approximately a 35-minute walk or 12-minute cycle away, with a pleasant route along country and riverside paths. There is also a bus stop into town, and we are 5 mins away from Dragonville Shopping area.
This is a friendly, owner-occupied family home rather than a student house. It would particularly suit a postgraduate student (mature preferred), postdoc, visiting academic or quiet professional looking for a calm, clean and well-organised place to live with some domestic support.
You would be living with a Durham University academic, his South Korean wife and their 11-year-old son, as well as an existing female postdoctoral lodger.
The bathroom and tenant fridge/freezer would be shared with her, so finding someone clean and considerate who is a good fit and with whom she feels comfortable is especially important to us.
We are friendly and welcoming but low-key, and we value privacy, consideration and clear boundaries.
The room and house include:
Furnished double room overlooking the back garden
New bed, wardrobe, desk, lamp, storage, bedding and towels will be provided (and anything else needed) - perfect for international travellers
High-quality blackout blind
Bathroom shared with one other lodger and cleaned weekly by my wife
Separate fridge and freezer for the two lodgers
Superfast internet throughout the house and garden
Large kitchen, dishwasher (used daily), utility room, balcony, double oven, convection hob, including a nice coffee machine, dishwasher, air fryer etc.
Range of Home gym equipment
Driveway parking and EV charging
Warm, energy-efficient EPC A home with solar panels
TV licence, Netflix and Prime (sometimes another)
Garage space for bike/suitcase storage
Council tax band E
To keep the house feeling like a home, our preferred arrangement is slightly homestay-style. My wife is an excellent cook (trained by a former restaurant owner), and we can provide breakfast and up to five healthy home-cooked weekday dinners, often with an Asian/global influence with flexibility if you want eat out or get takaway.
Dinner is usually around 6pm, but food can be left for you if you return later. We can also help occasionally with station lifts or a pick-up in bad weather etc.
Rent:
£750 per month: room only, with all bills included cleaning, towels, bedding etc.
£900 per month: all bills, breakfast and up to five weekday dinners, plus regular cleaning and bedding/towel laundry
Rolling monthly agreement with one month’s notice on either side and a £400 depsit. Medium or long-term stays will be considered, although we would welcome a longer-term arrangement with the right person.
Please message me with a little information about yourself if you think you might be a good fit, and we can arrange an informal chat and viewing.
Mutual fit is the most important criterion; we are also happy to keep the room as a study if we don't find the right person.
Note the photo is our already rented room, as the room for rent is currently a study, but we will decorate similarly.
