Safety tips when replying to an advert

Whilst it's extremely rare for people to have any trouble when they go to view a property, it can feel intimidating to go to an area you don't know on your own to check out a room.

Following these safety tips can help you feel secure when going to view a room or flat:

Take someone with you or share your plans

  • If possible, bring a friend or family member along to the viewing.
  • If they can’t attend, let someone you trust know the address, time, and details of your viewing.
  • Update them once your viewing is complete to confirm you’re safe.

Even a short call before and after the viewing can give peace of mind.

Check the property and area

  • Ensure that the property itself is secure, including doors, windows, and locks.
  • Consider the overall safety of the neighbourhood. If the area is unfamiliar, visit it at different times of the day, including at night, to get a sense of how it feels.

Meet the people you’ll be living with

  • Take time to meet and talk to the current tenants or homeowners.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels off during the viewing, it may be worth reconsidering.
  • Feeling comfortable with your potential flatmates is just as important as the property itself.
