18th century Country Cottage Bliss
The Space
A quick drive to both the Lakes District and the Yorkshire Dales and a short stroll to banks of the River Lune - - originally the cottage belonged to the Manor House and then was converted in the early 1980s to the current layout which is atmospheric as it enjoys a central position within the historic village of Melling.
The Company
Happy, professional couple who are both writing novels and when they're not doing that.... Bronwin is a recent PhD graduate and teacher, Matt works part time at Booths and exhibits his own photography. We both love the arts, music, films, theatre, philosophy, reading and writing, computer games (Bronwin studies them, but we don't have a PS4 in England yet, so no playing at home for now) friends, travel, fun, meditation, fair-trade, local and eco-friendly living (without being obsessive about it). We're open-minded, grounded and happy. We are Sydneysiders (from Australia) who moved to England in 2014 and we LOVE it. Our big thrill at the moment is visiting National Trust properties - being Australian all that history enthralls us.
The Cottage:
The cottage is simple, but homely and attractive full of traditional furnishings and cottage touches (Including the odd patch of worn carpet downstairs, lol!). The style is shabby chic in that the cottage hasn't been renovated since the 1980s and some areas of carpet and a few of the fittings are in need of attention. This is why our rates are generally more affordable than other Lakes District and Yorkshire Dales Cottage accommodation. Perhaps too the shabby chic style is part of its appeal. It is a charming traditional cottage with a period feel that includes a warm, cosy living room and kitchen. The cottage is a TV free zone, but if you have your own laptop you can access much better viewing online via the unlimited broadband wifi anyway.
The quiet village location in the Lune Valley is idyllic. In the nearby market village of Kirkby Lonsdale just a few minutes drive away (also accessible by bus, as are Ingleton and Lancaster) Turner painted a view that has been described as the best in all of England. Beyond the peaceful surrounds there are the nearby Dales and the Lakes national parks. The cottage is right on the outskirts of the Yorkshire Dales. You can be exploring the beautiful village of Ingleton in just a few minutes. Meanwhile the panorama of the Lakes District is only thirty (Kendal), or forty (Windermere) minutes drive away. Close to two areas of outstanding natural beauty, this is an idyllic place to be any time of the year.
You will have access to your own private, fully furnished single bedroom, shared bathroom, lounge and kitchen area.
There is also a small car parking area opposite the cottage.
The Neighbourhood
A special place - having the fells, the dales, mountains, rivers and sea just a short drive away. No traffic jams, a slower pace of life and historic cities like Lancaster, Kendal and Windemere in easy access.
Getting around
Bus service runs right past the house. Buses run in both directions to Hornby, Kirkby Lonsdale, Ingleton and also Lancaster. The cottage is less than 2 miles to Wennington Train Station.
There are stunning drives in every direction. Drive to the Lakes District, the Yorkshire Dales, to Lancaster, York, Liverpool, Manchester and Scotland.
Other Things to Note
We are now only taking short term bookings which means that the rent has gone up. If you need a place to stay for a short term feel free to contact us.
We heat our hot water via a boiler - generally in the mornings, but can work out the best times for all of us.
We also have gas central heating which we use in winter. The rest of the time we use a gas fire to warm up the lounge at night. Rent includes all bills (gas, electricity, unlimited broadband internet) except phone as you will need to use your mobile.
